Designed for the young beginner, ages six and seven. Students learn to play and recognize rhythms, read notes, understand basic music theory, learn proper technique at the piano, and play elementary pieces. Parental involvement is a must for the young beginner. We ask that a parent attend the group piano class and help monitor practice sessions at home. A digital keyboard or acoustic piano is required. Theory Level 1 corresponds with this course. Students must attend both group piano and group theory weekly.

This course is for students who have completed either Level 1A or 1B of Keyboard for Kids. The class is a continuation of the piano skills acquired in Level 1. Auditions take place the beginning of the fall semester to assign students to the proper class. The student expands their rhythm reading, explores more solo pieces, and works on duets with fellow classmates. Theory Level 2 corresponds with this course. Students must attend both group piano and group theory weekly.

The Piano Preparatory Program is proud to announce the opening of a new class within its piano program. This new class will be held exclusively for visually impaired children who wish to learn to play piano by reading music Braille notation. The goal of this class is to make available and assist visually impaired children in learning basic piano keyboard skills. Classes are taught by Ms. Simona Armbruster, who created and designed the curriculum. The calendar of activities and classes follows the standard Piano Preparatory Program schedule. Since all students are taught how to read music, they are held to the same standards as the sighted Preparatory students.

Private lessons are open to all students. Upon completion of Keyboard for Kids Levels 1 and 2, students are eligible for private lessons. Lessons cover a wide range of repertoire from all genres; technique is emphasized along with musicianship skills. Students are required to continue attending weekly theory classes. Private lesson times are arranged by the teacher.

All group piano classes meet in the Austin Weeks Technology Center and Library.
